Ihram at the miqat or on board

Preparation at home, journey, ihram at the miqat or on the plane, Makkah, then Madinah and return.

FR EN AR

Educational guide. If in doubt, ask your guide or a scholar.

The miqat is the boundary that must not be crossed without ihram when travelling to Makkah for Umrah. On a flight to Jeddah, the closest point on the route is usually Al-Juhfa (Rabigh) or its parallel. Prepare before the flight (full ablution, nails, hair removal, perfume on the body for men before the intention, ihram garments). When the crew announces the miqat, form the intention and start the talbiya. As a precaution, many guides have you form the intention slightly before the announcement.

Schools differMost scholars recommend saying “Labbayka ʿumratan”; the intention of the heart remains what matters. Entering ihram at the departure airport (as a precaution) or only when approaching the miqat are both accepted practices: follow your guide.

Supplications

لَبَّيْكَ عُمْرَةً

Labbayka ʿumratan

Here I am for an Umrah.

Muslim 1218, hadith of Jabir (the Prophet’s ﷺ pilgrimage)

اللَّهُمَّ مَحِلِّي حَيْثُ حَبَسْتَنِي

Allāhumma maḥillī ḥaythu ḥabastanī

O Allah, my place of release is wherever You prevent me.

Conditional intention, recommended if you fear being prevented (illness, unforeseen event).

Bukhari 5089, Muslim 1207 (conditional intention)

Common mistakes

What if…

I fell asleep and missed the announcement?

Form the intention as soon as you realise and tell the guide on arrival; he will say whether anything is due.

A woman is menstruating at the miqat?

She enters ihram normally (ablution, intention, talbiya); she only postpones the tawaf until her period ends.

I forgot to remove my underwear (man)?

Remove it as soon as possible; no compensation for a short-lived oversight according to the majority, ask the guide.
